Seventeen-year-old Jonathan Johnny Salas was killed by a stray bullet on June 23, 2017, in the Florence-Firestone neighborhood of South Los Angeles. He was riding his bicycle home from a dentist appointment near East 92nd Street and South Hooper Avenue around 11 a.m. when gunfire erupted after two vehicles collided and their occupants began fighting. A white car pulled up and someone inside opened fire; Johnny, who had no gang affiliations and was not involved in the altercation, was struck and pronounced dead at 11:26 a.m.
The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department detained three people who had been fighting but released them after questioning. Investigators sought surveillance footage to identify the shooter; the white car was last seen driving east on East 92nd Street. Johnny had just finished his junior year at Diego Rivera Learning Complex and dreamed of becoming a police officer. His family of eight, who worked multiple jobs to support the household, continue to mourn.
Did anyone in the Florence-Firestone area see the white car or have footage from near East 92nd and Hooper on the morning of June 23, 2017?
