Jamie Dawn Shipman, 57, was found dead at her home on Caspar Little Lake Road in Mendocino, California, on May 23, 2017. Investigators determined she had been shot and eventually classified the case as a homicide. Her 2009 Chevy HHR with a custom paint job was missing from the scene.
Within days the investigation led to Kelley Anne Coan, 39, and her son Alexander Phillip Coan, 20, who had been living on the same property as the Shipmans. Kelley Coan surrendered in San Joaquin County the day after Shipman’s body was found and was located in possession of Shipman’s missing vehicle. Alexander Coan was arrested on May 27 in Comptche after detectives concluded he was an active participant. Both were charged with murder and pleaded not guilty; a preliminary hearing was set for August 14, 2017.
The motive reported in charging documents was a dispute over the shared property. What relevant detail about the property or the days before May 23 might help explain how the dispute escalated to violence?
