Sofia Ceja was 17 when she was shot and killed in Moreno Valley, California, on April 14, 2017. The shooting was one of three victims wounded in the incident near Courage Street and Allies Place; authorities responding to reports of an assault with a deadly weapon found Sofia, a 26-year-old woman, and a 16-year-old boy with gunshot wounds. Sofia was transported to a hospital and later died; the other two victims survived and were treated.

Investigators later linked Sofia’s murder to a pattern of gang-related violence in the area. In January 2018 three men — twin brothers Christopher and Jonathan Armstead, both 22, and Diamond Scott, 21 — were arrested and charged with murder, attempted murder, and gang membership in connection with multiple Moreno Valley homicides, including Sofia Ceja’s. The suspects were held without bail and scheduled for arraignment.
