Salvador Alvarez, 47, was shot and killed in East Oakland on May 27, 2016. His death occurred amid a year of high gun violence in Oakland — the city recorded about 85 homicides in 2016 — and is described as part of a broader pattern of shootings often tied to disputes and gang activity.

Details about the shooting itself are sparse. Investigators have faced the common problem of witness reluctance in neighborhoods with frequent violence, which has hindered evidence gathering and progress on the case. The investigation remains open and the Oakland Police Department is asking anyone with information to come forward.
