Lian Xiu Wu, 65, was killed by a stray bullet on March 29, 2017, near her home at the intersection of Plymouth Avenue and Broad Street in San Francisco’s Ocean View neighborhood. She was struck in broad daylight while collecting recyclables and caring for young relatives; she was taken to hospital but died of her injuries. Two other men — a 40-year-old from San Jose and a 51-year-old from San Francisco — suffered non-life-threatening gunshot wounds in the same incident. Witnesses reported the gunfire appeared to come from a car during what was described as ongoing turf conflict between Sunnydale and Lakeview area gangs. A 24-year-old man named Jonathon Santos of Vallejo was arrested and booked on suspicion of murder and attempted murder and held without bail as the investigation continued. Lian Xiu Wu had emigrated from China 16 years earlier to help care for her family; her nephew Denny Truong created a fundraiser to cover funeral costs and help her daughter relocate to a safer area.
