Benjamin Roybal, 77, of San Bruno, California, was killed on March 11, 2017, after a dispute with his neighbor over the sale of a space heater. The argument escalated; Roybal was pepper-sprayed and shot in the chest by neighbor David Stubblefield. After Roybal was reported missing, a welfare check led officers to Stubblefield’s home where a strong odor and subsequent search uncovered dismembered remains placed in various containers around the property.

Stubblefield was arrested and charged with murder, destruction of evidence, and being a felon in possession of a firearm; his record included prior drug-related convictions. He initially claimed self-defense but later entered a no contest plea to second-degree murder under a plea agreement that resulted in a 40 years to life sentence with parole eligibility after 25 years under the Elderly Parole Program.
