David Michael Martin, 51, was killed on March 9, 2017, in a remote area west of Red Bluff, California. He died of multiple gunshot wounds to the chest. Family and community members remember him for humanitarian work, including disaster relief in Indonesia after the 2004 tsunami, and say his death left a deep void.

Investigators found that the shooter was Brandy Irene Turner, 37, the mother of Martin’s child; Turner left his body at the scene and was arrested. The case drew attention because of the violent circumstances and the personal relationship between victim and shooter. The emotional toll on Martin’s family and the Red Bluff community has been described as profound.
