Robert Rios, 35, of Placentia, California, was shot and killed at his Vista Avenue home on January 19, 2017, around 11:40 p.m. Three armed men forced their way into the residence; surveillance footage captured the suspects as they approached. Investigators say the attack grew out of Rios’s involvement as a small-time drug dealer and an alleged failure to pay taxes to a local gang.
Court records and trial testimony described Rios seeing the men on his security cameras and trying to negotiate before being overpowered. Ysrael Jacob Cordova is accused of shooting Rios twice; the intruders then beat him and fled. Augustine Velasquez was wounded during the incident and was later convicted of murder and conspiracy. Authorities identified Ricardo Valenzuela as another participant and linked the plot to orders from incarcerated gang leader Greg Munoz and alleged co-conspirator Johnny Martinez.
