Samantha Folsom was 26 when she was found dead in her Lewiston, Maine apartment after her worried parents checked on her on November 9, 2011. They discovered windows wide open and a fan blowing out—odd for a cold November—and found her body curled in a downstairs closet. Her death was initially labeled unexplained; investigators publicly reclassified it as a homicide about a year later. The official cause of death has not been released.

Investigators looked at people close to Samantha. Her estranged husband and a recent boyfriend were both reviewed but were later ruled out because each was incarcerated at the time of the killing. A neighbor identified a well-dressed man in a button-down shirt and tie wearing an identification badge; the neighbor said Samantha appeared terrified of him. That man has not been publicly identified.

No arrests or suspects have been announced.
