Spencer Turner, 27, of Ventura, California, was fatally shot outside the Golden China Restaurant on December 4, 2016. Known locally as the owner of a hauling business called 805 Haul, Turner was remembered by family and friends for his warm heart and infectious smile. George Harrison was also wounded in the incident, suffering a gunshot to the shoulder.

Authorities identified Sadiki Shakur as the shooter; he fled the state after the shooting and was arrested in Texas on December 15, 2016, before being returned to Ventura County. Shakur faced murder and attempted murder charges but later accepted a plea agreement, pleading guilty to voluntary manslaughter and assault with a firearm and admitting two special allegations of using a firearm. He received a 16-year prison sentence. Court filings referenced a history between Shakur and Turner, and the judge described the case as complex with losses on both sides.
