On November 14, 2016, 42-year-old Ignacio Contreras was shot to death on the front porch of a home on South Fourth Avenue in Avenal, California. Officers found him shortly before 6 a.m.; he had been shot at close range. Inside the same house investigators located 34-year-old Maria Corrales, also shot at close range in the living room. Maria’s 7-year-old son was in the home, unharmed, and witnessed the shootings.
Authorities identified the suspect as Francisco Frank Contreras, Maria’s ex-partner and the child’s father. The child reportedly identified his father as the shooter. Investigators say the motive appeared connected to a domestic dispute and ongoing stalking after the couple’s separation. Frank, 43 at the time, fled and remained at large; authorities described him as armed and dangerous and sought information on possible vehicles, a burgundy Chrysler PT Cruiser or a charcoal-beige Ford F-150.
The double homicide shocked Avenal and remains an open case. Anyone who knew Ignacio, Maria, or who has information about Frank Contreras’s whereabouts is asked to come forward.
