William Sims, a 28-year-old musician from El Sobrante, California, was killed on November 12, 2016. Sims was found beaten and shot on Appian Way after stopping at the now-defunct Capri Club on his way home. Inside the bar he was struck hard enough to crack his skull; after staggering outside he was shot in the head.
Three men from the scene were identified as Ray Simons, Daniel Ortega, and Daniel Porter-Kelly. Surveillance footage captured racial slurs used by the attackers, and authorities initially filed a hate crime enhancement; a grand jury later rejected that enhancement and the case proceeded on murder charges. In December 2021, after a month-long trial and a week of jury deliberations, all three were found guilty. Simons was convicted of first-degree murder, robbery, and assault and received life without parole. Ortega and Porter-Kelly were convicted of second-degree murder and assault, each facing 15 years to life.
Sims was well known in the Bay Area music scene, and his family and neighbors organized vigils and community responses, including the formation of Not In Our Town El Sobrante. If anyone knew William, his movements that night, or has additional information, please share what is known.
