Taj Fields was 43 when he was shot dead on November 2, 2016, outside his Hit Squad Boxing Center in Marysville, California. He founded the non-profit gym to mentor local youth and was widely described as a beloved boxing coach and community mentor. The shooting happened in front of his eight-year-old son, who later provided information to police.
Police arrested Roman Zarate, a former acquaintance and part-time worker at the boxing center, shortly after the killing. Zarate, who had prior arrests for burglary and robbery, was found in Fresno with a firearm that matched the caliber used in the shooting. He was charged with murder and vehicle theft. There was no apparent struggle or robbery before the shooting and the motive was reported as unclear.
If anyone knew Taj, worked at the boxing center, or has information about what led to that day, please share what is known.
