In the pre-dawn hours of February 10, 1999, 15-year-old Ashley Ouellette was found dead in the middle of Pine Point Road in Scarborough, Maine. Her body was lying facedown on the centerline with her hands by her sides; although still warm, she was pronounced dead at the scene. An autopsy determined she had been manually strangled and noted signs of sexual contact before death. She carried no identification and her personal belongings were missing.
The evening before, Ashley told her parents she was at a sleepover that turned into a party where teens were drinking. She later went to the home of brothers Steven and Daniel Sanborn and was allowed to sleep on a basement couch around 12:30 a.m. That was the last reported sighting. Investigators focused on the Sanborn brothers; Daniel’s account reportedly changed and blood spots were found in his car, while Steven acknowledged a prior brief sexual relationship with Ashley. No arrests have been made, and authorities say they believe they know what happened but lack evidence to obtain a conviction.
A related disappearance occurred months later when 21-year-old Angel Tony Torres, who reportedly said he knew who was involved, vanished on May 21, 1999 after a party where he was last seen with a friend of the Sanborns, Jay Carney. Police have not confirmed an official link between the two cases. Does anyone have information that could help resolve Ashley’s murder?
