Leticia Arroyo-Reyes, 34, of Santee, California, was fatally shot in her home on October 4, 2016, during a robbery and burglary. The attacker had been a drug customer who arranged to be let in by texting her that he was outside; once inside he shot Leticia in the head and left with several bags of methamphetamine.

Investigators tied the killing to Jose Luis Nunez Torres. Prosecutors said Torres recruited an acquaintance, Jaen Avila, to drive him to Leticia’s home; Avila later pleaded guilty to being an accessory after the fact and testified for the prosecution. In September 2018 Torres was convicted of first-degree murder with special circumstances—murder during a robbery, burglary, and lying in wait—along with additional charges for other crimes committed around the same time. In November 2018 Torres received life without parole plus an extra 25 years to life for using a firearm; other co‑defendants received separate sentences.

Leticia’s mother, Rosanna Reyes, described the family’s grief and the lack of remorse attributed to Torres.
