Courtney Brown, 38, of Walnut Creek, California, was shot and killed around 1:30 a.m. on August 27, 2016, near the intersection of Locust and Cypress streets as patrons were leaving the Redux Lounge and Crogan’s Sports Bar and Grill. Brown, who had been at Crogan’s shortly before the shooting, was struck three times in the back. Nearby officers heard the gunfire and paramedics transported him to John Muir Medical Center, where he later died.

Police identified 24-year-old Larry Griffin of Bay Point as a suspect the next day after a search of his home by the Central County Regional SWAT Team. Witnesses said they saw Griffin shoot Brown and flee; Griffin was charged with homicide and booked into the Martinez Detention Facility. The motive was not immediately clear, but investigators said the shooting was not random.

Court documents show Griffin later pleaded no contest to voluntary manslaughter and received a 16-year state prison sentence. Brown’s family reported he left behind a fiancée and a daughter. Does anyone have memories of that night or information about Brown’s activities downtown that could add context to what happened?
