On August 21, 2016, 21-year-old Sergio Cabral of Avenal, California, was fatally shot in a drive-by while walking on South Corcoran Avenue around 3:45 p.m. He was with his brother and two others when a car pulled up and someone inside opened fire; Cabral was pronounced dead at the scene. The shooting was believed to be gang-related.
A 16-year-old was stopped during a traffic stop and booked on homicide and gang-related charges. That juvenile, identified as Sergio Mathew Martinez, was tried in adult court for first-degree murder with special circumstance, gang and firearm allegations. The jury convicted Martinez of first-degree murder and found the enhancements and special circumstance allegations true; a directed verdict had been granted on two attempted murder counts during the trial and appellate claims were raised and denied.
Did anyone in Avenal at the time know Cabral and his movements that afternoon or have information about the vehicle involved?
