Terrence TMack McCrary Jr., 22, of Berkeley was killed on August 14, 2016, while attending a birthday party at Prime Development, a former streetwear shop and gallery at 322 15th Street in Oakland. A confrontation began after a group of young men harassed a woman; her boyfriend, Craig Fletcher-Cooks, intervened. Two men pulled out guns and began shooting. McCrary, an innocent bystander about five feet away, was struck by a stray bullet and died at the scene. Fletcher-Cooks was also killed and a third person was wounded.
Investigators later tied 19-year-old Otis Wyatt to the shootings; he was in custody on a separate murder when charged in connection with the Prime Development attack. Charges and the course of the prosecution were prolonged. The Alameda County District Attorney’s Office under Pamela Price ultimately dropped the murder charge related to McCrary and offered Wyatt a plea for voluntary manslaughter in the killing of Fletcher-Cooks, a decision that McCrary’s family called a betrayal. McCrary is remembered as a talented artist and at the Berkeley Skate Park, which bears a memorial plaque in his honor.
Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to come forward.
