Richard Moreno, 28, of Orange Cove, California, was killed on March 12, 2016. Local investigators determined his death resulted from a violent, targeted attack that prompted a criminal investigation in the small community.

Two Orange Cove residents, Ethan Lopez, 18, and Sage Martinez, 24, were arrested and charged with murder after witnesses and forensic evidence tied them to the incident. Prosecutors charged both with first-degree murder; the court later found them guilty and they received lengthy prison sentences. The Moreno family held vigils and memorials in Richard’s honor as the case moved through both criminal and civil courts.
