Joyce Tanerillo was found dead in her car at her South Portland residence on the evening of August 26, 1974. She was a Caucasian woman whose last known movements that day were described by her ex-husband: they met for coffee, he watched her drive away, and he said he saw her pick up a hitchhiker on Congress Street in Portland before she ran three red lights and sped off. He lost sight of her vehicle after that.
The Maine State Police later interviewed a suspect in the case, but no further details about the person interviewed or the outcome of that inquiry have been released. The matter was never resolved and remains an open, unsolved homicide.
Did anyone who lived near Congress Street or who picked up hitchhikers in Portland that day remember seeing Joyce or her car?
