On April 17, 1972 the body of 33-year-old Richard Joseph Albert was found in a wooded area off the Maine Turnpike in Saco. Albert had escaped from a New Hampshire state prison in November 1971 after only two months of incarceration; his life on the run ended with what was quickly ruled a homicide. The Maine State Police opened an investigation but were unable to identify who killed him.
The case grew cold over the decades and is now listed among the oldest unsolved homicides handled by the Maine State Police. Authorities have periodically revisited the matter and appealed for information. The circumstances of his final days as a fugitive and the details surrounding his death remain unresolved.
If anyone has information about Richard Albert’s escape, movements between November 1971 and April 1972, or the area off the Maine Turnpike near Saco, please share what you know.
