Ty Barrera was 20 and living in Paradise, California, when he was shot on February 6, 2016. Officers who responded to an emergency call in the 9200 block of the Skyway found Barrera with multiple gunshot wounds; he was taken to a hospital and died of his injuries.

Investigators identified 27-year-old Alex Edward McClintock of Paradise as the primary suspect after witnesses at the scene provided information and McClintock had already fled. A multiagency search led to his arrest on February 18, 2016, in San Jose by a fugitive apprehension team from the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation. He was brought back to Butte County and charged with murder, several counts of possession of a firearm and ammunition by a felon, grand theft of a firearm, related enhancements, and misdemeanors including grand theft of a firearm and disobeying a domestic relations court order.

At a preliminary hearing, Detective Sgt. Eric Reinbold and other witnesses testified. McClintock’s girlfriend, Lakeisha Barnett, said she saw him with a black handgun the morning of the shooting, described a phone call in which he sounded out of breath and suggested he might have shot someone, and said he asked her to dispose of the gun; police later located a firearm matching her description. The judge found sufficient evidence to send the case to trial and McClintock pleaded not guilty.
