On October 25, 2015, Sangju Sung, a 39-year-old resident of Los Alamitos, California, was shot to death near Catalina and Pine streets at about 5:05 p.m. He was found with multiple gunshot wounds. Sung was described as a dedicated husband and father who was active in his community and church; his sudden violent death left family and neighbors devastated.
Investigators quickly focused on a neighboring resident, 41-year-old Eleazar Vargas, after witnesses reported hearing multiple gunshots and seeing Vargas in the area around the time of the killing. Neighbors told police Vargas had been aggressive and unstable and that Sung had been having ongoing issues with him; Sung had texted his wife shortly before the shooting about Vargas causing problems. A car linked to Vargas was located soon after the incident, but Vargas himself could not be found and was later named a suspect. No arrest had been made at that time.
Does anyone who knew Sung or who was in the Catalina and Pine streets area that afternoon have information to share?
