Richard A. James, 23, was shot and killed early on October 14, 2015, while standing with a group on the patio outside the Comedy Store on the 8400 block of Sunset Boulevard in West Hollywood. Coroner’s records report he was struck at least once in the upper torso and was pronounced dead at 1:36 a.m. after being taken to a local hospital.

Witnesses said a black male wearing a hooded sweatshirt began firing at the group, and they heard at least six shots. The suspect was last seen fleeing southbound on Olive Drive. The Comedy Store was hosting a Roast Battle at the time; attendees initially thought the gunfire were firecrackers and the club canceled shows the following day. The motive remains unclear and investigators have not confirmed any prior interaction between James and the shooter.

No arrests have been announced and the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department continues to investigate. If anyone has information that could help identify the shooter, please contact the Sheriff’s Department Homicide Bureau or Crime Stoppers.
