Yvonne Hernandez was 26 and living in San Pablo, California, when she was shot and killed in her home on September 10, 2015. Her husband, Jose Claudio Munoz, shot her twice — one bullet struck her heart — while their 4-year-old son was in the home and witnessed the killing. Munoz called 911 after the shooting and admitted to the crime; the recording includes him trying to console the child.
Prosecutors said Munoz was a controlling, abusive husband who had spied on Hernandez and restricted her movements, and they argued the killing was premeditated and driven by jealousy. The defense said Munoz acted in the heat of passion and was impaired by methamphetamine. A jury convicted Munoz of first-degree murder and two gun enhancements after one day of deliberation; he was also convicted of felony child abuse. In January 2019 Munoz received 50 years to life for the murder and an eight-year concurrent term for the child abuse charge. His appeal for a new trial was denied.
If anyone knew Yvonne, her family, or has information about the household dynamics before September 10, 2015, please share what you know.
