Kathryn ’Kate’ Steinle, 32, was shot and killed on July 1, 2015, while walking with her father and a friend along Pier 14 in the Embarcadero district of San Francisco. A single bullet struck her in the back; she was taken to a hospital but died two hours later. The bullet had ricocheted off the pier’s concrete deck after being fired from about 90 feet away.

José Inez García Zárate said he found a firearm wrapped in cloth beneath a bench and that it accidentally discharged when he picked it up. He had been deported from the United States five times before the shooting, and his immigration status became a focal point in public debate. Prosecutors charged him with first-degree murder, second-degree murder, and involuntary manslaughter; a jury acquitted him of those charges in November 2017.

The rifle used had been stolen from a federal Bureau of Land Management ranger’s car about a week earlier, and García Zárate had prior nonviolent drug offenses. Steinle’s family later filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the city of San Francisco and federal officials. Does anyone have direct information about witnesses or scene details from Pier 14 that could shed more light on what happened that day?
