Kamahl Middleton, 36, of Pinole, California, was shot and killed on December 29, 2014, in a Berkeley parking lot near San Pablo and University avenues at about 9:45 p.m. Middleton, who used a wheelchair after a spinal injury, and his fiancée Rebekah Cleberg had arranged to sell one and a half pounds of marijuana they grew under a medical license to a buyer they contacted through Craigslist. The buyer, identified as Carl Young, agreed to pay $3,200 and the meeting location was chosen as a halfway point between San Leandro and Pinole.

When the buyer arrived with three other males instead of just his girlfriend, a struggle broke out. Khalil Phanor thrust his head into the car, announced a stickup and fired one shot that struck both Middleton and Cleberg; Middleton died and Cleberg survived. Phanor was identified as the shooter and Gregory Foote as the driver.

Middleton was a San Francisco State University graduate with a bachelor’s degree in marketing and worked as chief marketing officer for a company producing natural energy drinks. His mother, Ruth Middleton, called the shooting savage and unforgivable at sentencing. If anyone knew Kamahl or has information about the night of the shooting, please share what can help the record.
