Jar Pao Lee was 19 when he was fatally shot on October 6, 2014, in a vehicle-to-vehicle shooting on northbound Highway 70 near the Grand Avenue/Nelson Road offramp. The shooting began after a confrontation outside a FoodMaxx on Oro Dam Boulevard; Lee and three others were traveling in two vehicles and had no gang affiliations, while the assailant, Ker Vang, reportedly believed they were rival gang members. Lee and another passenger in the sedan were struck; Lee later died after efforts to reach medical aid in Chico.

Ker Vang was arrested two days later. Surveillance footage from the supermarket linked Vang to a white Honda Civic identified by the victims. He was charged with multiple felonies, including second-degree murder, and a jury convicted him on seven felony counts, among them second-degree murder. The defense later sought a new trial, alleging prosecutorial misconduct and pointing to an absent witness; the judge denied the motion, noting the defense had the opportunity to call that witness. Anyone with information about Jar Pao Lee or the events that night is asked to come forward.
