Arturo Hinojosa Jr., 49, was shot and killed at his Petaluma home on Suncrest Hill Drive on September 10, 2014, around 4 p.m. Responding officers found him dead from at least one gunshot wound. Investigators quickly focused on a suspect after witnesses reported seeing a pickup truck with an ATV in the bed near the scene; that vehicle matched a pickup linked to 37-year-old Mikol Wayne Stewart of Santa Rosa.
Stewart was arrested in Santa Rosa and charged with murder and burglary. Authorities said Hinojosa and Stewart were not strangers, though their exact relationship was unclear. Police noted Hinojosa grew medical marijuana and was a registered sex offender from a prior conviction for oral copulation with a minor, but did not believe those facts were directly connected to the killing. Stewart’s record included prior convictions for felony and misdemeanor spousal batteries and misdemeanor DUIs.
The Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office and Petaluma Police Department continued gathering evidence and investigating whether others were involved. If anyone knew Arturo Hinojosa Jr., his movements that day, or saw the pickup and ATV near Suncrest Hill Drive on September 10, please come forward with information.
