Michael Hendrix Planells, 29, was shot and killed on August 24, 2014, in the parking lot of 13109 Borden Avenue in Sylmar, California. The Los Angeles Police Department reports he was searching for cans to recycle near the Sylmar Recreation Center when he was shot at about 6:35 a.m. He died at the scene.
Investigators believe Planells was one of three people killed during an apparent one-hour shooting spree that morning in the Pacoima–San Fernando area; the other fatalities were Mariana Franco, 23, and Gloria Tovar, 59. Authorities say the shootings were part of a string of attacks dating back to March 2014 that included additional fatal and nonfatal victims.
The Los Angeles County district attorney charged Alexander Hernandez, 34, with five counts of capital murder and multiple related counts, including ten counts of attempted murder and several firearm and related charges; he has pleaded not guilty. Does anyone have information about Planells whereabouts that morning or about the Sylmar Recreation Center area that could help investigators?
