Yanira Serrano-Garcia, an 18-year-old resident of Half Moon Bay, California, died on June 3, 2014, after being shot by a San Mateo County sheriff’s deputy at the Moonridge housing complex on Miramontes Point Road. Family members said Serrano-Garcia had special needs and had stopped taking her medication; they called for an ambulance so she could get medical help. When deputies arrived, she was reportedly armed with a knife and lunged at Deputy Menh Trieu, a nine-year department veteran. The deputy fired his weapon and Serrano-Garcia was pronounced dead at the scene.
The shooting prompted an investigation by the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office and the district attorney’s office. No arrests or charges were announced immediately, and the family questioned why non-lethal options such as a Taser were not used and raised concerns about how officers handle encounters with people who have mental health conditions. What information can anyone add about Yanira’s movements that day or about witnesses at the scene?
