Henry Curtis, 49, died on May 24, 2014, in Lebec, California, after an officer-involved shooting at his Starr Court residence. Deputies from the Kern County Sheriff’s Office had responded to a domestic violence call and encountered Curtis armed with a knife. He refused repeated commands to drop the weapon and then lunged at deputies, at which point Deputy Rogelio Medina discharged his service weapon and struck Curtis. Curtis was pronounced dead at the scene and had an active parole violation warrant at the time.
The shooting prompted an internal review by the Kern County Sheriff’s Office; Deputy Medina, a two-year department veteran, was placed on paid administrative leave while the use-of-force incident was examined. Curtis’s record included prior arrests and parole violations, and he had been arrested on a felony parole violation on April 1, 2014.
What details about the encounter or the department review might shed more light on whether the shooting was justified?
