Francis Patrick Gregory, 69, of West Tisbury, Massachusetts, was killed while hiking on May 16, 2014, on the Iron Canyon Trail in the Sacramento River Bend Outstanding Natural Area near Red Bluff, California. He and a 76-year-old companion were confronted by an armed assailant who demanded money and personal belongings. Both men were shot about 100 yards from the trailhead; Gregory died at the scene and his companion was critically injured and airlifted to a hospital.

Gregory was a longtime town moderator in West Tisbury, having served 23 years, and owned EduComp, a computer and art supply store in Vineyard Haven. The suspect was described as a white male adult with a thin build, short black hair, and a black mustache or beard. The Tehama County Sheriff’s Office circulated that description and investigated the case with assistance from other agencies.
