Christopher McDaniel, 41, of Oildale, California, died on March 26, 2014, after a high-speed police pursuit in northeast Bakersfield ended with deputies shooting him seven times. The chase began when McDaniel, riding a motorcycle, did not stop for a deputy and continued through city streets for about four minutes, reportedly running traffic signals and riding on sidewalks in ways described as creating a significant danger to public safety.

The Kern County Sheriff’s Office placed the deputies on administrative leave while investigators reviewed the shooting. The investigation concluded the deputies’ use of lethal force was justified, and there were no arrests or criminal charges related to McDaniel’s death. McDaniel’s known history of non-compliance with law enforcement and his erratic conduct during the pursuit were cited in official accounts.

Family and community members called for further review of the use of force and discussed possible litigation and policy changes at the Sheriff’s Office. Did anyone in the area witness the pursuit or have information about the events leading up to the shooting?
