Errol Chang, 34, of Pacifica, California, died on March 18, 2014, after a confrontation with law enforcement that began when his family reported he was paranoid and possibly armed with an axe. Officers found him in the backyard; he brandished the axe and then barricaded himself inside the home. Evacuations and a SWAT response followed after officers learned he might have access to a rifle and ammunition.

After hours of failed attempts at communication, SWAT entered the house. Chang, armed with a knife, stabbed one of the SWAT officers; other officers then fired at Chang, killing him. The stabbed officer survived after being taken to hospital. The San Mateo County District Attorney later ruled the shooting a justifiable homicide, saying lethal force was necessary to save the injured officer’s life.

Chang had documented mental health diagnoses of schizophrenia and bipolar disorder; those conditions were raised previously during a 2010 San Francisco medical marijuana case in which he and his father were acquitted. The incident renewed debate over how law enforcement handles people with severe mental illness. If anyone knew Errol Chang, his movements that day, or has additional information about the standoff, please share what is known.
