Steven Kohus, 26, a Marine from Twentynine Palms originally from Morrow, Ohio, was shot and killed on March 2, 2014. Kohus, a motor-transport mechanic attached to 1st Battalion, 7th Marine Regiment who had served since 2010, was found with a gunshot wound at a residence on Saladin Avenue and was pronounced dead at the scene despite medical efforts.
Authorities arrested 22-year-old fellow Marine Brock Myers at the scene and charged him with murder; Myers pleaded not guilty and was held without bond pending further court proceedings, with the next appearance scheduled for March 13, 2014. Some acquaintances suggested the shooting may have been accidental, but the case was being pursued as a homicide.
Kohus was remembered by family and the Marine community for his service and several military awards; his passing was marked by a public visitation and a private mass and burial. Does anyone have information about Kohus, the events on Saladin Avenue, or the March 2, 2014 incident?
