I’ve been thinking a lot about the role of mental health and intoxication in incidents like the Hans Kevin Arellano shooting. It’s incredibly difficult for everyone involved when someone is in such a vulnerable state. The fact that Arellano had a BAC of .26% suggests he was not in his right mind, which makes me wonder if better training or protocols could help officers handle these situations differently. It’s a loss for his family no matter how you view the details, and I can’t imagine how tough it must be for them. I’m curious about what kind of de-escalation techniques are being taught these days and if more emphasis is being put on understanding mental health and substance-induced behavior. Does anyone know if there’s ongoing conversation or reform in Santa Ana regarding this?
