Sandra Miller, 34, was found shot to death at her Shingletown, California home on May 7, 2013, along with her daughters Shelby, 8, and Shasta, 4. Deputies responding to a 911 call from the residence heard a woman sobbing and loud banging; the doors were locked and the three victims were located inside with fatal gunshot wounds. Sandra’s husband, Shane Franklin Miller, was immediately identified as the primary suspect; he had a documented history of domestic violence and prior convictions including felony marijuana cultivation and a federal gun conviction that resulted in nearly four years in federal prison.

After the murders a nationwide manhunt named Shane Miller as armed and dangerous; his truck was later found abandoned near Petrolia, California, and his dog was seen along the Lost Coast Trail. A $25,000 reward and numerous tips followed, but Miller evaded capture for more than a year before a body later identified as his was recovered on a Northern California riverbank. The deaths devastated the Shingletown community and underscored the deadly consequences of domestic violence.
