Jason Harper, a 39-year-old math teacher and volleyball coach from Carlsbad, California, was found dead in his home on August 7, 2012. Police discovered his body in the master bedroom, concealed under a blanket and other debris. He had been shot with a two-barrel derringer; the bullet entered the left side of his torso and pierced his heart. The call that prompted the welfare check came from the lawyer of the person later identified as the perpetrator.
Investigation attention quickly turned to Jason’s wife, Julie Harper, who was arrested about 16 hours after the murder. Julie had filed for divorce five days before the killing and had withdrawn nearly $20,000. She told police she had been physically and verbally abused and said she shot Jason in self-defense after an argument over a missing computer. Instead of calling 911, she covered his body, took the couple’s three young children out for breakfast, left them with her sister, then went to her father’s office and later contacted a criminal defense lawyer.
At trial the defense played older video recordings in which Jason was allegedly heard screaming at Julie; the prosecution argued the killing was premeditated and pointed to Julie’s actions after the shooting. The murder weapon was never recovered. Does anyone have information about Jason’s last hours or about details not yet made public that could clarify what happened?
