Manuel Levi Loggins Jr., a 31-year-old Marine sergeant, was fatally shot by an Orange County sheriff’s deputy on February 7, 2012, in San Clemente, California. Deputy Darren Sandberg witnessed the crash, approached the scene, and said Loggins ignored commands to stop while acting erratically and making irrational statements.
When Loggins returned to the SUV and tried to re-enter, Deputy Sandberg opened fire, killing him; the DA later reviewed the case and concluded the deputy’s actions were justified, citing a perceived imminent threat to the children if Loggins drove away. Loggins’ family filed a wrongful death claim against the County of Orange, the sheriff’s department, and Deputy Sandberg, alleging excessive force, civil rights violations and other claims, and noting the daughters’ trauma and that they were held for questioning for several hours.
Does anyone have information about the crash sequence or first responders’ actions that night?
