Gumaro Carrillo Velazquez, a 61-year-old Latino, was shot and killed on February 12, 2010, in the Central-Alameda neighborhood of Los Angeles. Coroner’s records state he was wounded in the head after an assailant approached while he was on the 1300 block of East 42nd Street; he was taken to a county hospital and pronounced dead at 10:59 p.m. Early reports said he had been standing in front of a residence, but investigators later determined he was playing cards on a porch when the shooting occurred.
The Newton Division of the Los Angeles Police Department described the killing as gang-related. On December 1, 2010, 21-year-old Latino Stevie Cardenas was arrested and charged with murder; he was being held in lieu of $2 million bail at Pitchess Detention Center with a next court date set for December 15, 2010.
Did anyone who knew Gumaro, or who was in the Central-Alameda area that evening, see or hear anything that could help clarify what happened?
