Esther Rubio was an 11-year-old from King City, California, who was fatally wounded during a gang-related shooting at a youth soccer game on December 2, 2008. She and her 15-year-old brother were sitting in the spectator bleachers when a gunman opened fire; the brother survived but Esther later died of her injuries several months after the attack. Authorities concluded the shooter was aiming at a rival gang member who was also at the game.
The investigation led to the arrest of 17-year-old Ezekiel Lopez-Figueroa. Prosecutors said he fired multiple shots into the crowd; he was charged with Esther’s murder and the attempted murder of her brother, was found guilty at trial, and received three consecutive life terms. The case highlighted gang violence in King City and prompted community and law enforcement efforts to address the problem.
