Maria Elena Hicks, a 57-year-old grandmother from Pico Rivera, California, was shot in the head on August 10, 2007, after confronting a group of people who were tagging a wall near her home. Hicks honked and flashed her headlights to try to stop the graffiti, then followed one of the taggers, Cesar Lopez, in her vehicle. Angel Rojas emerged from a nearby car and fired multiple shots; Hicks died three days later at Los Angeles County USC Medical Center.

Legal proceedings resulted in a conviction for Angel Rojas, who was 16 at the time of the shooting. A jury found him guilty of first-degree murder, shooting at an occupied vehicle, street terrorism and unlawful firearm activity, and determined the crime benefited the Brown Authority street gang; he was sentenced to 50 years to life and ordered to pay restitution. Cesar Lopez testified against others and took a plea, receiving a 21-year sentence. Jennifer Tafolla and Richard Rolon were acquitted of murder but convicted of street terrorism and given time served.

Hicks was remembered as a community champion who stood up against vandalism. Did anyone in Pico Rivera know Maria Elena Hicks or have information about the events of August 10, 2007?
