Eighteen-year-old Nhi A Gip of Alhambra, California, was killed on December 1, 2006, when he suffered a fatal gunshot wound in a drive-by shooting in Alhambra. The attack also targeted another man, Hung Tu, who survived despite being wounded.
Investigators identified David Do as the alleged trigger man. Prosecutors relied on witness statements and forensic evidence to argue the shooting was premeditated and carried out to further criminal street gang activity. At trial the jury convicted Do of first-degree murder for Gip’s death and of willful, deliberate, and premeditated attempted murder for the attack on Hung Tu, finding special circumstance allegations true that the murder was committed by intentionally discharging a firearm from a vehicle and to further gang activity.
Do was sentenced to life without the possibility of parole for the murder plus a firearm enhancement of 25 years to life, and received a consecutive life term with parole eligibility for the attempted murder plus the firearm enhancement. Anyone who knew Nhi Gip or has information about the shooting is asked to come forward.
