Michael Guadalupe Esparza, known as Magic Mike, was a 34-year-old tattoo artist who was shot in his South Whittier tattoo parlor, Body Illusions, on April 26, 2004. Around 3:30 p.m. three men in motorcycle gear entered while Esparza was tattooing a customer; one of the men opened fire and struck Esparza in the head. The customer and four employees escaped unharmed. Esparza was taken to UC Irvine Medical Center in Orange and died of his injuries on May 1, 2004.
Investigators concluded the attack was gang-related and say the parlor was targeted because some employees were affiliated with rival gangs; Esparza himself was not a gang member. Nine months after the shooting a 23-year-old gang member, Manuel Louis Jaramillo, confessed to participating and implicated two others, saying one of them fired the fatal shots. The Los Angeles County district attorney charged him with murder and attempted murder.
Does anyone have information about the April 26, 2004 attack or knew Esparza and his work at Body Illusions?
