Stephen Douglas Sorensen was a 46-year-old deputy with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department who was killed on August 2, 2003, in Southeast Antelope Valley, California. He was responding to a trespassing call in a rural area off Highway 138 near Llano. A witness reported hearing about six gunshots; deputies found Deputy Sorensen’s patrol car and, after roughly an hourlong search, his body. He had been shot six times with a .223 caliber rifle and his feet were tied together, with evidence his body had been dragged through the desert. Reports indicate he had likely stumbled upon a methamphetamine lab before he was killed.
A suspect was located about a week later at a Lake Los Angeles house, admitted the killing during a phone conversation with authorities, then refused to surrender. A standoff followed; deputies used tear gas and a mechanized battering ram, the suspect fired, and the house soon burned to the ground. The suspect’s charred body was found inside along with Deputy Sorensen’s gun and radio. Sorensen had served 12 years with the Sheriff’s Department, was a U.S. Army veteran, and is survived by his wife and son.
Does anyone have information about Deputy Sorensen’s last call or observations from near Highway 138 that day?
