Ricardo Calderon was 12 when he was killed in a family home shooting in Simi Valley, California, on September 7, 2001. He was one of three people who died that day; his grandmother, 80-year-old Esperanza Martinez, and a 4-year-old relative, Shantal Rios, were also killed when a man entered the house through a garage door and opened fire.
The shooter, 35-year-old Reynaldo Herrera Rodriguez, targeted the household because he believed an ex-girlfriend, Maria Rios, had infected him with a viral disease; Maria Rios was not at home during the attack. Three other family members were wounded: 19-year-old Lucia Vargas was shot in the abdomen and hand, 16-year-old Rigoberto Calderon was shot in the leg, and 18-year-old Rafael Calderon Jr. escaped by jumping from a second-story bathroom window and broke his wrist.
Rodriguez, who worked as a civil engineer for the state Transportation Department, was the subject of a statewide manhunt and was found dead by suicide in the Los Padres National Forest the next day as officers closed in. The case did not go to trial. Did anyone in the community have contact with the family or know more about the events leading up to this attack?
