Lieutenant Leonard Larry Bruce Estes, 61, of the Butte County Sheriff’s Department was killed on July 26, 2001, in Inskip, California, while responding to a neighbor dispute over rent money and the reported theft of weapons. Estes and Deputy William Hunter entered the suspect Richard Bracklow’s dimly lit cabin and were ambushed; Hunter was shot three times in the head and died instantly. Estes was struck four times, including wounds to the arm, chest and head, and despite being critically wounded managed to return fire, fatally wounding Bracklow before succumbing to his injuries.

Forensics showed all three men fired their weapons during the close-range, confined shootout. Bracklow had been described as a survivalist with a history of carrying weapons and prior altercations. The killings were widely mourned by law enforcement and the community, and officials publicly honored the officers’ sacrifice.

Is there anyone who remembers the neighborhood or the people involved and can add details about the events leading up to that day?
