Michael Allen Mike Markle, 24, was fatally shot on January 10, 2001, while working as assistant manager at Lyon’s Restaurant in Grass Valley, Nevada County, California. Born March 17, 1976, in North Las Vegas, he had been a lifelong resident of the Yuba-Sutter area, attended First Presbyterian Church in Marysville, and is survived by two young children, his mother, and a sister.

The killings were part of a shooting spree carried out that morning by 40-year-old Scott Harlan Thorpe. Thorpe first attacked the Nevada County Department of Behavioral Health, where two people were killed and others wounded, then drove to Lyon’s and shot Markle and a cook before fleeing. Thorpe later confessed to a brother, a Sacramento County sheriff’s deputy, and was arrested after a three-hour standoff.

The shootings spurred legal and legislative changes in California, including the passage of Laura’s Law, named for one of the victims.
