Sylvia Velia Nena Flores was 13 when she was killed in Pico Rivera, California, on July 21, 2000. The attack occurred in the early morning inside the family home and left multiple family members dead: Sylvia’s father Richard Flores, 42, and her brothers Richard Jr., 17, and Matthew, 10, were also murdered. Two teenage assailants — Michael Naranjo, then 17, and his girlfriend Monica Diaz, then 16 and an adopted member of the Flores family — carried out the attack.

Sylvia’s mother, also named Sylvia, survived despite 15 stab wounds and a slashed throat; the eldest daughter Esperanza and Monica’s half-sister Laura Reta, both 18, also survived. Naranjo pleaded guilty and received life without parole; Diaz was found guilty by a jury and received a 100-year-to-life sentence after her defense raised childhood trauma issues that the court rejected.

Does anyone have memories of the Pico Rivera community reaction or knew the Flores family and can share what they remember?
